Spinal stenosis
is defined simply as
the narrowing of the
spinal canal. It can
be as a result of
progressive
compression of the
spinal nerve roots
or spinal cord due
to multiple
arthritic changes.
This can occur
anywhere in the
spine and typically
involves the lumbar
spine. Numerous
causes for this
condition exist.
Typical symptoms
include hip or leg
pain that is
generally worse with
standing or walking
and is usually
relieved by sitting
down. Activity is
therefore usually
limited by pain
and/or weakness.
Depending upon the
severity of symptoms
non-operative
therapy is initially
instituted. Exercise
therapy,
anti-inflammatory
medicine, and
epidural steroid
injections may
provide relief. Some
patients will
require surgery to
enlarge the spinal
canal and relieve
pressure on the
spinal nerve roots.
