Hand Surgery
by Ronald R. Romanelli, M.D.

Hand surgery is usually performed to evaluate or to treat simple disorders of the hand and also to treat trauma to the hand; i.e. fractures or tendon injuries. Many medical conditions can affect our delicate hands and these conditions need to be addressed with either a conservative treatment program or an operative treatment program in order to correct those deformities. Common hand disorders are tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, which is a compression of the median nerve, and arthritis.

Several hand conditions can be treated conservatively with medicines and exercises. Occasionally, cortisone and surgery will be needed to correct some hand disorders.
